The Observatory supports UN’s “Early Warnings for All” Initiative and New International Technical Regulations
In 2024, the World Meteorological Organization appointed Mr Yeung Hon-yin, Senior Scientific Officer of the Observatory, as the vice chair of the new Expert Team on Multi-Hazard Early Warning and Service Delivery Technical Guidance. Mr Yeung plays a leading role in drafting the new international technical regulations. (More……)

Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Sea Level Centre Established
The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Sea Level Centre was jointly established by the National Marine Data and Information Service, the Hong Kong Observatory and the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau on 16 April 2025. Dr Chan Pak-wai, Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, and Ms Lam Ching-chi, Senior Scientific Officer, attended the Unveiling Ceremony and discussion meeting held in Tianjin. (More……)

The Observatory signs plan for cooperation with Shanghai Meteorological Service
On 17 April 2025, Dr Chan Pak-wai, Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, and Mr Feng Lei, Director-General of the Shanghai Meteorological Service, signed an updated Plan for Cooperation in Meteorology and Technology, in Shanghai. This enhances multiple areas of exchanges and cooperation, to foster the development of modern meteorological services and operations in mega cities. (More……)

Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Meeting on Cooperation in Meteorological Operations
The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao (GHM) Meeting on Cooperation in Meteorological Operations was held in Guangzhou on 13 March 2025. In the meeting, the parties not only reviewed the progress of their work and discussed plans for future cooperation, but also celebrated the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the GHM Lightning Location Network. The Observatory organises Workshop on Nuclear Emergency Preparedness
From 13 to 15 January 2025, the Hong Kong Observatory hosted a training workshop on nuclear emergency preparedness, with the theme of radiological dispersion modelling and consequence assessment. Experts from the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology were invited to deliver lectures. (More……)

Aeronautical Meteorology Adviser of Hong Kong Observatory visits meteorological and aviation authorities in South Korea
Mr Lee Kwok-lun, an Aeronautical Meteorology Adviser of the Hong Kong Observatory stationed at the Integrated Airport Centre of the Hong Kong International Airport, visited the Korea Meteorological Administration and the Air Traffic Command Centre in Korea from 11 to 13 February 2025, to exchange views on the latest developments in aviation weather technologies and services. Cadets of the Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps visit the Observatory
On 4 February 2025, cadets of the Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps visited the Observatory to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of aviation meteorology on aviation safety. Observatory colleagues explained to the cadets the mechanisms of wind shear and turbulence formation, as well as associated alerting methods. (More……)
