Cadets of the Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps visit the Observatory

Lee Yiu-fai

On 4 February 2025, cadets of the Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps visited the Observatory to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of aviation meteorology on aviation safety. Observatory colleagues explained to the cadets the mechanisms of wind shear and turbulence formation, as well as associated alerting methods. The cadets also took the opportunity to visit the Meteorological Garden at the Observatory Headquarters, and learned about various meteorological instruments.

After visiting the Headquarters, the cadets proceeded to the Tai Lam Chung Terminal Doppler Weather Radar Station, to experience firsthand how the Doppler weather radar effectively monitors weather near the airport, and detects wind shear and microbursts caused by severe convective weather.
