First joint observations of a tropical cyclone in Hong Kong air space using two aircraft

On 26 October 2024, the Hong Kong Observatory, in collaboration with the Shanghai Typhoon Institute of the China Meteorological Administration and the Asia-Pacific Typhoon Collaborative Research Centre, conducted a joint aircraft reconnaissance operation, to monitor Severe Tropical Storm Trami over the central northern part of the South China Sea. The two aircrafts – one from each of the Hong Kong Government Flying Service and the Shanghai Typhoon Institute – collected meteorological data using dropsondes and onboard equipment respectively. Hong Kong Observatory Calendar 2025 now available

The Hong Kong Observatory Calendar 2025 is now available. The calendar features beautiful photos of weather and optical phenomena. Members of the public can appreciate the wonders of nature through these photos, which include scenes of double rainbows, asperitas and upslope fog. The Observatory hopes that the photos will encourage the general public to protect the environment, be aware of climate change and its impacts, and embrace a greener lifestyle. (More……)
