Observatory Submitting Outdoor Radon Data to Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW)

Starting in 2026, the Observatory regularly submits outdoor radon (Rn-222) activity concentration data monitored at the King's Park Meteorological Station, after quality assurance and analysis, to the World Data Centre for Greenhouse Gases under the World Meteorological Organization Global Atmosphere Watch programme, for climate research and atmospheric analyses by global meteorological institutes and scholars.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas, primarily originating from the decay of uranium in soil and rock. Although outdoor radon poses extremely low risk to human health due to atmospheric dilution, continuous monitoring of its concentration trends plays an important role in enabling the scientific community to deepen understanding of geological variations, the impacts of climate change on the atmosphere, and monitoring environmental radiation levels.
