HKO and SCHSA Remind Public to Prepare for Very Hot Weather in Summer

On 28 May 2026, the Observatory and the Senior Citizen Home Safety Association (SCHSA) held a joint press conference to cover the latest developments of El Niño, and to remind the public to prepare for the very hot weather in summer.

The Acting Assistant Director of the Observatory, Mr Choy Chun-wing, said the probability of a strong El Niño event occurring this year is gradually rising. This together with global warming means Hong Kong is expected to have significantly higher annual mean temperatures this year and next year. The Observatory also expects the mean temperature this summer to be above normal, hence reminds members of the public to get prepared, especially those who are more vulnerable to heatstroke, who should pay special attention in order to prevent discomfort caused by the heat.

The Chief Executive Officer of the SCHSA, Ms Maura Wong, urged senior citizens to take precautions against the heat during the height of summer, and called on carers to take a more proactive role in looking after the elderly by providing timely care and support.
