Annual Outlook for 2025

Tse Wai-po

The Observatory has issued the annual outlook for 2025. The sea surface temperatures over the central and eastern equatorial Pacific are expected to be near normal in the coming summer (June – August). Looking further ahead, some climate models suggest that the sea surface temperature in the region may again decrease to a normal to below normal range later this year.

Taking into consideration a number of factors – including the development of El Niño/ La Niña, climate model predictions and objective guidance, it is expected that there is a higher chance of having a normal to above normal number of tropical cyclones coming within 500 kilometres of Hong Kong this year. The annual rainfall in Hong Kong for this year is expected to be near normal. However, Hong Kong is still likely to be affected by rainstorms. Members of the public are reminded to be prepared for the rain and tropical cyclone seasons.

Regarding temperature, as the climate continues warming, the annual mean temperature in Hong Kong is expected to be above normal this year.
