The Observatory’s “Working Together for a Better Climate” Open Day

Editorial Board

The Observatory’s “Working Together for a Better Climate” Open Day was held on 30 November and 1 December 2024. The public response was overwhelming, with close to 10,000 visitors attending the event.

As 2024 marked the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Open Day’s theme was “Working Together for a Better Climate”. It featured exhibitions and games to introduce various services of the Observatory as well as providing a brief overview of the long-standing collaboration between the Observatory and meteorological authorities in mainland China and around the world over the years. Visitors actively participated in the Open Days and learnt about the impacts brought by climate change, energy saving and emission reduction. Dr Chan Pak-wai, the Director of the Observatory, and the Observatory’s Mascot, “Dr. Tin”, also took this opportunity to interact with visitors.

Mr Tse Chin-wan, the Secretary for Environment and Ecology, and Miss Janice Tse Siu-wa, the then Permanent Secretary for Environment and Ecology (Environment), also attended the Open Day and interacted with teachers and students of the Community Weather Information Network (Co-WIN). A talk on climate change was organised for Co-WIN participants, to enhance their understanding and awareness of climate change and extreme weather.

Besides the Observatory’s colleagues, around 60 volunteers from “Friends of the Observatory” acted as goodwill ambassadors to greet the visitors, contributing to the smooth operation of the two-day event.

The Observatory has also launched an online “Open Day”. The public can simply browse the “Observatory Online Open Day” webpage to enjoy virtual tours of the Observatory’s headquarters at home and learn about the Observatory’s work and services.
