Accreditation of the Hong Kong Observatory Ambient Gamma Radiation Level Measurement Service by the International Organization for Standardization

11 November 2015

The Hong Kong Observatory has recently received ISO 9001 accreditation for its Ambient Gamma Radiation Level Measurement Service. It demonstrates that its good quality management practices meet international standards.

The radiation monitoring network of the Observatory, now comprising 12 fixed radiation monitoring stations, monitors continuously the ambient gamma radiation levels in Hong Kong. Colleagues with different roles are responsible for the checking and maintenance of the station equipment, quality management of the radiation data, publication of the measurement report, etc. Good quality management practices not only improve work efficiency but also ensure reliability of the measurement results.

At the celebration for the ISO 9001 accreditation yesterday, Mr Tsui Kit-chi, Assistant Director of the Observatory, said, "It is the spirit of pursuing for excellence and teamwork of our colleagues that successfully leads to international accreditation. The Observatory will continue to pursue protection of lives through science.”

Members of the public are welcome to browse the Observatory webpages and the mobile app “MyObservatory” for information on the real-time hourly mean ambient gamma radiation level. The webpages are : http://www.hko.gov.hk/radiation/rmn_hourly_e.htm and http://www.hko.gov.hk/whatsnew/r4/GIS_RMN_201503_e.htm (GIS version). For details on “MyObservatory”, please look into the following webpage : http://www.weather.gov.hk/myobservatory_e.htm. In addition, the Observatory publishes a monthly bulletin on the measurement results of the ambient gamma radiation level. It is available at http://www.hko.gov.hk/radiation/ermp/rmn/applet/map/rmn_bulletin_pdf_e.htm for public consumption.
