Seasonal forecast for spring 2012

28 February 2012

The seasonal forecast for this spring (March - May 2012) is now available at the following website:
http://www.weather.gov.hk/wxinfo/season/season.htm

A majority of the latest forecasts issued by climate prediction centres around the world indicate that southern China is likely to be under the influence of a stronger ridge of high pressure for the middle to latter part of this spring, and is expected to experience normal to above-normal temperature and normal to below-normal rainfall. On the other hand, the central and eastern equatorial Pacific have been cooler than normal since last September. A La Niña event has been established early this year (please refer to http://www.hko.gov.hk/lrf/enso/enso-latest.htm). The current La Niña is peaking in recent months. Many climate models forecast it to weaken during this spring and end late in the season.

Taking the above into consideration, the Hong Kong Observatory expects Hong Kong to experience normal to above-normal temperature and normal to below-normal rainfall this spring (March - May 2012).
