Hong Kong Observatory Open Day 2025

Editorial Board

There was an overwhelming public response to the Observatory’s Open Day 2025, held on 22 and 23 March, with close to 10,000 visitors attending the event.

The Open Day adopted the theme of this year’s World Meteorological Day – “Closing the Early Warning Gap Together”, echoing the United Nations’ “Early Warnings for All” initiative. It is hoped that everyone can be protected by early warning systems, enabling them to promptly respond to extreme weather and minimise the impacts arising from increasingly severe natural disasters such as floods, heatwaves, and storms.

The Open Day featured exhibitions and games, attracting active participation by visitors. Through the event, visitors learned about the Observatory’s efforts in collaborating with meteorological authorities around the world over the years, and leveraging the latest technologies to provide various services to the public. They also gained a deeper understanding of the impacts of climate change and extreme weather.

During the Open Day, Observatory staff enthusiastically interacted with the public and thoroughly introduced the Observatory’s work. There were also live demonstrations of weather reporting, as well as a special appearance by Dr Tin, the Observatory’s Mascot, so visitors could have their photos taken with him.

Besides Observatory colleagues, over 70 “Friends of the Observatory” volunteers acted as goodwill ambassadors to greet the visitors, contributing to the smooth operation of the two-day event.
