On 23 March, the Director of the Observatory, Dr Cheng Cho-ming, hosted a press briefing to recap the weather in 2020 and elaborate on the weather outlook in 2021 as well as the Observatory’s latest developments [in Cantonese].

In terms of new services, in addition to incorporating the “Probability of Significant Rain” forecast into its 9-day weather forecast, launching the “Personalised Website” that supports multiple languages (including eight ethnic minority languages) and the “Localised Heavy Rain Advisory” service that issues advisories with reference to recorded rainfall and rainfall forecasts from its nowcasting system, the Observatory will launch several new products, such as the interactive e-book titled A Tour of Tropical Cyclones for children, to enhance their understanding of tropical cyclones and awareness of disaster prevention, and a webpage introducing the 100th anniversary of upper-air meteorological measurements. In addition, the Observatory will introduce a trial feature, “My Weather Observation”, on the MyObservatory mobile app, to enable the public to report special weather phenomena such as rainbows and hail, which aims to enhance public awareness and knowledge of different weather conditions.
