2025 Weather Review

Philip Chan Kin-yu

With a mean temperature of 24.3°C, 0.8°C above normal, 2025 was the sixth warmest year in Hong Kong since records began. All 12 months of the year were warmer than usual, with October experiencing a record-breaking monthly mean temperature. The mean temperature for the second half of the year (July to December) was 26.3°C, ranking among the highest mean temperatures on record for the same period. The annual numbers of Very Hot Days and Hot Nights were 53 and 54, respectively – both ranking third highest on record. The annual rainfall was 2,558.7 millimetres, about 5 percent above normal. The Observatory issued five Black Rainstorm Warnings during the year, breaking the record for the most Black Rainstorm Warnings in a year.

A total of 14 tropical cyclones necessitated the issuance of tropical cyclone warning signals, more than double the long-term annual average of around six, and the highest since 1946. The Hurricane Signal No. 10 was issued twice during the year, due to Typhoon Wipha in July and Super Typhoon Ragasa in September, equalling the record set in 1964.
