Observatory adopts environmentally friendly radiosondes

In late 2025, the Hong Kong Observatory commenced the use of a new model of environmentally friendly radiosondes to replace traditional models, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of meteorological observations. The Observatory typically conducts upper-air meteorological observations twice daily, during which radiosondes are attached to weather balloons that are launched into the atmosphere. Upon completion of the observation, the radiosonde descends to the sea or land with a parachute. The casing of the new radiosonde is made of biodegradable natural fibres, allowing it to fully decompose in the natural environment. The adoption of environmentally friendly radiosondes for more environmentally sustainable observations is in line with objectives advocated by the World Meteorological Organization.
An environmentally friendly radiosonde (inset) attached to a weather balloon was being launched by the Automatic Upper-air Sounding System at King's Park Meteorological Station.
