    A dedicated website for applications/programs to retrieve weather data provided by HKO

    A new website (http://data.weather.gov.hk) has been launched since June 2013.

    This website is dedicated to the authorized persons / organizations to let their programs/applications
    retrieving the weather information regularly.

    If your program/application regularly download the data from http://www.weather.gov.hk or http://www.hko.gov.hk,
    please modify your program/application to download the data from http://data.weather.gov.hk instead.

    Please DO NOT direct your programs/applications to download the information from the HKO Main website
    (http://www.hko.gov.hk/http://www.weather.gov.hk) as it would lead to overloading of our servers and
    affect the other users to browse our website.

    The message of special weather tips is now included in the "Current Weather report".

    Subject : Enhancement of weather cartoon(s)

    For those using the text-only version of HKO website as data source of
    your applications, please be informed that, with effect from 20 March 2012,
    the Hong Kong Observatory will show two weather icons, as necessary, in a
    new “Current Weather Report” web pages of the text-only version:

    http://www.weather.gov.hk/textonly/forecast/chinesewx2.htm

    Two weather icons will be used, as necessary, to depict the weather sequence within the
    forecast period. The first one will be mainly for the current weather condition, whereas the
    second one will describe the weather after the change, e.g. fine weather to rainy weather.
    In the event of no significant weather change within the forecast period, one icon that best
    describes the forecast weather will still be used.

    renamed to "Tsuen Wan Ho Koon (荃 灣 可 觀 in Chinese)"

    Subject : Integrated Set of Weather Icons for "Current Weather Report" and "7-day Weather Forecast"

    Please be informed that an integrated set of new weather icons will be launched at
    11:30 a.m., 6 February 2007 to replace the existing ones (for "Current Weather Report"
    and "7-day Weather Forecast"). The new set of icons and the revised specification for
    the Hong Kong Observatory's text-only website will be effective at 11:30 a.m.,

    Date : 2 Aug 2005
    Subject : Change from “濕度” to “相對濕度”

    With effect from 2:30 p.m., 16 August 2005, the Observatory
    will use the phrase“相對濕度”in lieu of “濕度” in its weather
    bulletins. Please note that the change will also affect the
    Chinese version of the following webpages:
    * Current Weather Report
    * 7-day Weather Forecast
    However, the English version of the webpage shall not be affected.

    Date : 29 April 2005
    Subject : Use of UTC in Marine Forecast and Shipping Warning

    In current practice, the Greenwich Mean Time ("GMT") which lags
    behind the Hong Kong standard time by 8 hours, is used in Marine
    Forecast and Shipping Warning.

    Please be informed that with effect from 16 May 2005, all times
    currently expressed in GMT shall be changed to Coordinated Universal
    Time ("UTC"). Theoretically, UTC is a refinement of GMT. However,
    for general operational purpose, their difference should be negligible.
    Hence, you may take UTC and GMT to be the same. Notwithstanding this,
    your attention is drawn on the change from "GMT" to "UTC" in the webpages.

    2. Current position and intensity of tropical cyclones (to be updated
    hourly on the "Tropical Cyclone Position" webpage whenever the Tropical
    Cyclone Warning Signal No.3 or above is in force)

    Subject : Enhancement of Weather Service with additional tropical cyclone
    information

    Please be informed that the Hong Kong Observatory will make available
    the current and forecast intensity of tropical cyclones in the vicinity
    of Hong Kong in terms of the maximum sustained wind near the centre
    of tropical cyclone starting from 1 July 2004. Please refer to the
    updated Specification (section 2.1 and 4.2) for the format of the
    information displayed on the text-only website.
