Meteorologists from Guangdong and Macau appreciated the Observatory's automatic weather station

Meteorologists from Guangdong and Macau paid a visit last Friday (26 January 2007) to the Observatory's automatic weather station at the Hong Kong Wetland Park, which was set up last year. The three parties exchanged experience and insight regarding the construction and facilities of weather station. The meteorologists expressed appreciation for the Observatory's implementation of automatic weather stations and provision of real-time weather information to the public.

Mr. Xu Yongke, Deputy Director of the Guangdong Meteorological Bureau, said, "The setting up of an automatic weather station is not simple. This station is well located and well equipped, and is indeed of world-class standard."

Mr. Tong Tin-ngai from the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau said, "I most appreciate the incorporation of a network camera in the automatic weather station. It provides real-time weather photos which are very useful to the public and visitors. It is food for thought."

The automatic weather station at the Hong Kong Wetland Park was jointly built by the Hong Kong Observatory and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. It started operation in mid-2006. The station provides air temperature, relative humidity, wind direction and speed, atmospheric pressure and rainfall. It is also equipped with a network camera to produce real-time weather photos of the Park. Members of the public and visitors may make use of such information to know about the latest weather conditions around the Park. The 21st Guangdong - Hong Kong - Macau Seminar on Meteorological Science and Technology was held in Hong Kong between 24 - 26 January 2007, during which meteorologists from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau shared results of research and made on-site visits exchanging operational experience. More than 20 papers were presented in the Seminar covering various topics including typhoons, weather forecasting, severe convective weather, climate, atmospheric research and applied technology.
