An area of low pressure near Leizhou Peninsula brought unsettled weather to the coastal areas of Guangdong on Friday (18 May). Thunderstorms started to affect Hong Kong on Thursday night (17 May). The rain turned heavy in the morning on Friday and most parts of the territory were affected. The Hong Kong Observatory issued the Thunderstorm Warning and the Amber Rainstorm Warning as follows: Thunderstorm Warning: 10:45 p.m. 17 May to 4:30 p.m. 18 May Up to 5 p.m. on 18 May, most parts of the territory received more than 40 millimetres of rain. The rain was heaviest over the eastern part of the New Territories. At Kat O, over 150 millimetres of rainfall were recorded while the rainfall at Sai Kung exceeded 100 millimetres.
