Bimetallic actinograph
Under the hemispherical glass dome of the instrument, there were two parallel rectangular white-coated strips of bimetal, between which was placed a strip of bimetal coated black for absorption of solar radiation. The strip will bend due to the difference in thermal expansion of the two different metals. The black bimetal strip was connected to a lever pen which would record the reading on a chart mounted on a clock drum.
