The tenth issue of Online Quiz Games - Weather Radar

27 July 2015

Radar, originally invented for military purposes, is able to detect the direction and range of objects. With advancements of technology, radar has become more widely used nowadays. For instance, weather radar is a vital tool for monitoring the weather. Its working principle is to emit electromagnetic waves from the ground to the atmosphere. In case there is a rain area nearby, the waves will be reflected back to the radar by water droplets or ice crystals inside the rain area. By analysing the intensity and travelling time of the reflected signals, the intensity and location of the rain area will then be determined.

The Hong Kong Observatory utilizes weather radars to monitor severe weather in real time for safeguarding public safety. How much do you know about our radars? Please come and play this issue of the quiz games. This issue will end on 9 August.
