The eighteenth issue of Online Quiz Games - Geomagnetism and Earthquake

16 November 2015

Geomagnetism is a natural magnetic field generated from the inner core of the Earth. The magnetic field passes through the Earth's surface pointing approximately from the South Pole to the North Pole. Compass utilizes this magnetic property to give directions.

Earthquake is generally caused by the movement of the plates on the crust. Rubbing or collision between plates can induce different magnitudes of earthquakes. The Hong Kong Observatory has been monitoring earthquakes for a long period of time and set up a number of seismometers in the territory. The Observatory also receives real-time data from around 600 seismometers around the world. Parameters including the origin time, epicenter, magnitude and depth of the earthquake can then be computed using these data. In response to locally felt earthquake or relatively intense earthquake in other parts of the world, the Observatory will disseminate relevant information to the public through the Internet and social media instantly.

Please join this issue of the quiz games to learn more about geomagnetism and earthquake! This issue will end on 29 November.
