The fifteenth issue of Online Quiz Games - Marine Meteorology
5 October 2015
In addition to public and aviation weather services, the Hong Kong Observatory also provides marine meteorological services including local tidal information, weather information for South China Coastal Waters and marine forecast, etc. These services facilitate fishermen and the shipping community to obtain information on the latest weather situation and warnings over different sea regions. Whenever a tropical cyclone is located within the area bounded by 10oN and 30oN latitude, 105oE and 125oE longitude, the Observatory will issue Tropical Cyclone Warning for Shipping at 3-hourly intervals. Besides, when a tropical cyclone affects Hong Kong, the Observatory will also assess the threat of storm surge.
Ship weather observations are important to the analysis of weather systems over ocean and assessment of sea conditions. Under the Voluntary Observing Ship (VOS) scheme of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Observatory has recruited since 1949 a fleet of locally based voluntary weather observing ships, which ply between Hong Kong and various ports of the world, to send weather information at different sea regions to meteorological centres over the globe.
Please don't miss this issue of the quiz games on marine meteorology which will end on 18 October.
