With the advancement of technology, many weather observations have been automated nowadays. Taking regional weather in Hong Kong as an example, weather elements such as temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, rainfall amount are measured by the Observatory's automatic weather stations. Besides saving manpower, automated weather observation can also collect much more data as compared with manual observation. With a stable telecommunication network, weather data can be transmitted to the Observatory's forecasting offices in real time. They are useful for weather monitoring and forecasting. Besides, technical staff of the Observatory will also calibrate the equipment regularly for the assurance of data quality.
