The twelfth issue of Online Quiz Games - Monsoon

24 August 2015

The formation of monsoon is due to temperature difference between the continent and its adjacent oceans. It is an atmospheric circulation system associated with seasonal changes in the direction of prevailing winds over a large area. Taking the summer season of the Asia continent as an example, since the landmass absorbs heat faster than the ocean, temperature of the landmass is generally higher than that of the ocean. This makes the air pressure over the landmass generally lower. Such pressure difference causes the prevailing winds to blow from the ocean towards the continent, forming the "summer monsoon". The situation is reversed in winter when the prevailing winds blow from the landmass towards the ocean, forming the "winter monsoon". To safeguard the public, whenever Hong Kong is affected by strong winds associated with the monsoon, the Observatory will issue the Strong Monsoon Signal to remind members of the public to take precautionary measures.
