Revision of the seasonal forecast for autumn 2012

15 October 2012

The rainfall of September 2012 recorded at the Hong Kong Observatory was 213 mm, about 35 percent below the normal value of 328 mm. The mean temperature of September 2012 was 28.0 ºC, slightly higher than the climatological average of 27.7 ºC but still within the normal range. Over the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, the rising trend of sea surface temperatures moderated significantly from September to early October. In view of such new changes and taking into account the latest forecasts by climate models around the world and the development of El NiƱo, the Observatory expects higher chance for Hong Kong to experience normal to below-normal rainfall and near-normal temperature this autumn (September to November).
