Latest Developments in Global Climate Change

Eliza Chan Man-yee

The “State of the Climate in Asia 2022 report” by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) states that the warming trend in Asia from 1991 to 2022 was nearly twice as fast as that in 1961 to 1990. In 2022, a total of 81 disasters such as flooding, storms, and extreme temperatures occurred in Asia, resulting in more than 5,000 deaths, over 50 million people affected, and economic losses exceeding US$36 billion.

As global warming continues, the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as heat waves and rainstorms are expected to increase. Global carbon emissions must be significantly reduced in order to mitigate the impact of climate change.
