According to a report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the global mean sea level reached a record high in 2022. In satellite records from 1993 to 2022, the rate of global mean sea level rise doubled between the first and last decades of this time span.

Human activities emit substantial amounts of greenhouse gases, leading to climate warming. The expansion of seawater due to heat and the melting of glaciers and ice sheets on land cause sea level rise. Sea level rise increases the risk of coastal areas being inundated.
