Latest Developments in Global Climate Change

    Eliza Chan Man-yee

From the middle of June to the end of August 2022, Pakistan experienced heavy rain over a large area. The rainfall in August was the highest since 1961. Torrential rain caused flash floods and landslides. A third of Pakistan’s land was flooded, more than a million houses were destroyed, and more than a thousand people were killed.

Research shows increasing heavy rainfall in Pakistan in tandem with the country’s warming climate. Climate change caused by human activities has made extreme weather such as rainstorms and heatwaves more frequent and intense globally. We must work together to reduce carbon emissions and reach carbon neutrality as soon as possible to mitigate the serious impacts of climate change.
