“2016-2020 Top 10 Mind-Boggling Weather and Climate Events Selection”

In recent years, extreme weather conditions such as intense cold surges, scorching temperatures, super typhoons and torrential rain have affected Hong Kong and various parts of the world. Meanwhile, melting ice in polar regions and rising sea levels have led to widespread concern regarding issues related to climate change across the world.

The weather is closely related to our daily life. With global warming, extreme weather events such as heatwaves and more frequent intense rainfall events have caused severe damage to different places around the world, and even loss of life. Through arranging the voting for the “2016-2020 Top 10 Mind-Boggling Weather and Climate Events Selection”, the Observatory hopes to raise the public’s awareness of significant weather and climate events in Hong Kong and around the world in the past five years, along with boosting their awareness of extreme weather and climate change as well as concern for the natural environment.

The selection process was held online. Participants were asked to select the five weather and climate events from the shortlists in each of two categories – “Hong Kong” and “Worldwide” – that they considered the most significant or impactful or the most representative of the climate crisis. They also had a chance to receive an Observatory souvenir pack. The selection period ended on 28 February 2021. Voting results will be announced in late March.
