Mr Shun Chi-ming retired in February, after having served as Director of the Observatory for almost nine years, and was succeeded by Dr Cheng Cho-ming.

Since Mr Shun took office as the Director, Hurricane Signal No.10 has been issued for three times, including that for “Mangkhut which brought the most serious damages to Hong Kong since “Ellen”. He described the strike of “Mangkhut” on Hong Kong as the biggest challenge for his term. Mr Shun worked with different departments and institutions to make good preparations, and repeatedly reminded the public to be on alert before the typhoon hit. Fortunately, Hong Kong was able to avoid serious casualties.

Mr Shun, who has worked at the Observatory for 34 years, said that over the years, he has witnessed continuous improvements in weather forecasting technology and the increasing public expectations regarding the Observatory's work, which makes it more necessary than ever for the Observatory to keep pace with the times and improve its services. The Observatory also needs to be more responsive to the needs of and strengthen communication with the public, in order to enhance society's disaster prevention awareness and resilience.
