In 2018, the Observatory established two new lightning detection stations, located at Chek Lap Kok and Dongao Island*, Zhuhai respectively, and equipped with new model sensors. In addition, lightning sensors at four existing stations, namely Chung Hom Kok, Tsim Bei Tsui, Sha Tau Kok and Taipa✝ in Macau, had also been replaced with new sensors (Figure 1). After trial run and optimization, the new lightning (detection) sensors are now put into full operation to provide lightning information to weather forecasters, other users and members of the public.
The new lightning location network, after optimization, brings improvements in lightning location accuracy as well as detection efficiency. Furthermore, the detection coverage of the lightning location network has extended with more sensitive new lightning sensors in place and the new Dongao Island lightning station situated in a relatively further south location (Figure 2).
