Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 10 p.m., Typhoon Fung-wong was estimated to be about 630 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 18.5 degrees north 118.6 degrees east) and is forecast to move north at about 12 kilometres per hour crossing the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

In the past couple of hours, Fung-wong adopted a northerly track. With Fung-wong edging closer to the coast of Guangdong, there will be occasionally strong northerly winds offshore locally today and tomorrow, up to gale force on high ground. However, due to terrain sheltering effect, the chance of having persistent strong winds generally over the territory is relatively low tonight and tomorrow morning. The Standby Signal, No. 1 will remain in force before noon tomorrow.

Fung-wong is expected to be closest to Hong Kong between later tomorrow to overnight, skirting more than 400 kilometres to the east of Hong Kong. Depending on the intensity change of Fung-wong and its distance from Hong Kong, the impact of the northeast monsoon on Fung-wong, and local wind conditions, the Observatory will assess the need for issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 or the Strong Monsoon Signal. Fung-wong will then move towards the vicinity of Taiwan, departing from Hong Kong and weakening gradually.

Under the combined effect of Fung-wong and the northeast monsoon, the water level over the coast of Hong Kong will be generally about 0.5 metres higher than normal during the high tide overnight tonight. Flooding may occur in some low-lying coastal areas in the small hours. The water level at Victoria Harbour will rise to around 3 metres above chart datum. There will be swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

1. Precautions should be taken. Drains should be cleared of obstructions, and windows and doors should be checked.

2. People in areas of exposed to high winds or in low-lying areas should take precautions against strong winds and flooding.

3. Fishing vessels and low power vessels in open sea should seek shelter as soon as possible and be secured properly with moorings.

4. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's website and mobile app for the latest information on the tropical cyclone.
