Press Release

HKO to issue real-time weather photos at local tourist spots (10 January 2005)

The Hong Kong Observatory is enhancing its weather information service for the tourism community by releasing real-time weather photos of two local tourist spots, Tsim Sha Tsui and Cheung Chau, at its "Regional Weather" webpage. These photos will enable the public and tourists to assess the latest weather conditions and plan their travel accordingly.

They can also view the animation of weather photos for the past three hours and some notable weather events of the past.

On this webpage, photos taken between 7am and 7pm Hong Kong Time are displayed and updated every 15 minutes.

Cheung Chau, a beautiful island with an old fishing port, is frequented by lovers of natural scenery. Tsim Sha Tsui, apart from having some of the best views of Victoria Harbour, is a very popular shopping spot for tourists.

Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Ms Clara Chong, commended the innovative weather services offered by Hong Kong Observatory. "Through the years, the Observatory has been striving to enhance the public weather services with new technology, reinforcing Hong Kong's image as an advanced cosmopolitan city," she said. "Both Cheung Chau and Tsim Sha Tsui are popular tourist districts. Now that visitors can see weather photos of these two districts on the Internet in real time, they will be able to better plan their travel and have a more enjoyable time in the city."

The Executive Director of the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong, Mr Joseph Tung, said "We are glad that the Observatory has added in its regional weather webpage the real-time weather photos taken at the two tourist spots at Tsim Sha Tsui and Cheung Chau. We believe that this information can serve travel agents and tourist guides even better in planning their travel."
