The Hong Kong Observatory and Hong Kong Science Museum will hold a popular science talk on "Climatic Challenge of China in Past, Present and Future" on Saturday (February 14).

The talk in Putonghua will be given by the special consultant of the China Meteorological Administration on Climate Change, Professor Ding Yihui. Professor Ding, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, is an internationally renowned climatologist with in-depth knowledge and insight on the subject of climate change.

He will explain, in layman's terms, global climate changes over the last 100 years and major impacts on the ecosystem and on China's economy and society. Measures to slow down climate change and ways to overcome the potential adverse consequences will also be discussed.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report issued in 2007, most of the observed increase in global temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gases. The global climate is predicted to continue on a warming trend in the coming 50 to 100 years.
