HKO organises training course on weather observation

The Hong Kong Observatory is inviting people to enrol in a "weather observation" training course to be held in October.

Weather is intimately related to daily life. Observing the weather and getting a thorough grasp of current conditions is the first step in making an accurate forecast of the future. For example, clouds take on different shapes and appearances under different seasonal weather conditions. To a large extent, a person can tell the current weather by the appearance of the clouds.

The training course in October aims to meet the demands of weather enthusiasts in Hong Kong. The course, covering basic weather and cloud observation techniques and practice, will be conducted by three experienced officers of the Observatory.

The course is particularly suitable for people fond of outdoor activities. A better understanding of the weather enables them to make the right response when the activity is affected by the weather. There are many traditional sayings relating sky conditions and weather changes and some of them are region-specific. Care must be taken in applying the wisdom of traditional experience, with special consideration given to local circumstances. Course participants will learn how to make effective use of the weather data available on the Observatory's website. Moreover, they will be given an opportunity to observe the weather themselves under the guidance of Observatory staff.

Scheduled on the mornings of October 11 and 25, the course will be conducted in Cantonese at the Hong Kong Observatory Headquarters from 9.30am to 12.30pm. The course fee is $225 per person. Those interested are invited to check out details and download the application form at
