Very Hot Weather Warning

In operating the Very Hot Weather Warning, the Hong Kong Observatory considers, besides the temperature, also the wind speed and relative humidity.

The temperature, wind speed and relative humidity yesterday (23 July, Monday) did not warrant the issue of the Very Hot Weather Warning. The wind was in the region of 15 kilometers per hour, while the daytime humidity dropped below 70%. The wind has a ventilating effect on the human body, while a relatively low humidity helps carry away body heat by evaporation.

While the humidity stayed about the same this afternoon (24 July, Tuesday), the wind in the urban area became light after midday and the temperature climbed in the ensuing couple of hours. The Hong Kong Observatory issued the Very Hot Weather Warning at 2:20 p.m to remind the public of the very hot weather and high risk of heatstroke.

The maximum temperature at the Hong Kong Observatory was 33.8 degrees for the day (recorded at around 3:40 p.m.), one degree above that of yesterday.

It is expected that the weather will remain very hot in the coming few days. Members of the public staying outdoor are advised to drink plenty of water, avoid over exertion and prolonged exposure under the sun. They are also advised to wear loose clothing and put on a suitable hat.
