Rainstorm on 10 June 2007

Under the influence of an active trough of low pressure, heavy rain and squally thunderstorms affected Hong Kong today (10 June 2007). Rain was heaviest around 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. in the early morning. The Observatory issued the Special Announcement on Flooding in the northern New Territories and the Red Rainstorm Warning Signal at 3:15 a.m. and 3:25 a.m. respectively.

From midnight till 6 p.m., more than 100 millimetres of rainfall were recorded in many places of Hong Kong. The rainfall recorded over Lantau Island, Cheung Chau, Lamma Island and the northwestern part of the New Territories even exceeded 150 millimetres. Figure 1 shows the rainfall distribution over Hong Kong today (till 6 p.m.).

This trough of low pressure will continue to affect the south China coastal areas and rainy weather is expected to persist over Hong Kong in the next few days. For the latest weather forecast, please refer to the following webpages:
