People are invited to join a "Weather Observation" training course on September 16 and 30 organised by the Hong Kong Observatory. Weather affects different walks of life. Appreciating the weather through observation is the first step to formulating an accurate weather forecast. For instance, there are different shapes of cloud according to the weather conditions and different seasons. From this, one can generally tell what the current weather is like. There is no lack of weather enthusiasts in Hong Kong. It is to meet their demand that the Observatory organises this training course. The course will be conducted by three experienced officers. Apart from the basics in weather observation such as cloud observation and classification, the course will also cover explanation of some weather folklore and use of weather data available on the Observatory's website. The course is particularly suitable for people fond of outdoor activities. A deeper understanding of the weather will enable them to take the proper response when their activities are affected by the weather. There are many traditional sayings relating sky conditions to weather changes and some of them may be region-specific. People should bear this in mind when applying these experiences. In the course, participants will have an opportunity to observe the weather themselves under the guidance of Observatory staff. Scheduled for the afternoons of September 16 and 30, 2006, the course will be conducted in Cantonese. The fee is $195 per person.
