Rainstorm on 16 July 2006

An active southwest monsoon brought heavy rain and thunderstorms to Hong Kong early this morning (16 July 2006). The Observatory issued the Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal at 2:10 a.m. In view of the rapid development of the rainstorm, the Observatory issued the Red Rainstorm Warning Signal at 2:35 a.m. and the Black Rainstorm Warning Signal at 2:50 a.m. As the rain weakened, the Black Rainstorm Warning Signal was replaced by the Red Rainstorm Warning Signal at 5 a.m., and by the Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal at 5:45 a.m.

From midnight till 5 a.m., more than 150 millimetres of rainfall were recorded in Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, Cheung Chau and Tseung Kwan O. Between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m., the Hong Kong Observatory registered 115.1 millimetres of rainfall, which is the highest on record for hourly rainfall at the Hong Kong Observatory. The last record of 109.9 millimetres was recorded on 8 May 1992.
