An active trough of low pressure brought heavy rain and thunderstorms to Hong Kong today (2 June 2006). The Observatory issued the Amber Rainstorm Warning at 10:35 a.m. In view of the rapid development of the rainstorm, the Observatory issued the Red Rainstorm Warning Signal at 10:55 a.m. to replace the Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal. In the afternoon, the rain intensity weakened. The Red Rainstorm Warning Signal was replaced at 2:45 p.m. by the Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal, which was cancelled at 3:30 p.m.

From midnight till 6 p.m., more than 150 millimetres of rainfall were recorded in Sai Kung, Sha Tin and Tai Po. The rainfall in Tsuen Wan, Tsing Yi and northern Lantau even exceeded 200 millimetres. For the rainfall distribution in Hong Kong today (2 June 2006), please refer to the map below.
