The Hong Kong Observatory organizes course on earthquake and tsunami (9 September 2005)
Members of the public are invited to enrol on a training course in October on "The Basics of Earthquake and Tsunami" organized by the Hong Kong Observatory.
At the end of 2004, the Indian Ocean severe earthquake caused tsunamis that devastated areas in South Asia. This disaster drew people's attention to earthquake and tsunami worldwide. The Observatory organizes this training course in order to let the public gain a basic understanding of earthquake and tsunami and the appropriate precautionary measures to take against these natural disasters.
The lecturer, Mr. Chan Ying-wa, Scientific Officer of the Observatory, said, "A public education programme is crucial to the success in prevention and mitigation of natural disasters. This course enables the public to have a better understanding of the relationship between earthquake and tsunami. It also increases their awareness and preparedness towards such natural disasters."
The course covers basic knowledge on earthquake and tsunami, related precautionary measures and safety rules, major historical earthquakes and tsunamis, as well as earthquakes that affected Hong Kong. The course will be held on the morning of 8 October 2005, at a fee of $75 per person. Those interested are invited to check out details and enrol at: |
