The Hong Kong Observatory Launches Weather Information at Peng Chau

The Hong Kong Observatory is enhancing its weather service for the tourism community by releasing weather information at Peng Chau in its "Regional Weather" webpages.

Located in the waters to the east of Lantau Island, Peng Chau overlooks Penny's Bay (Chok Ko Wan) and Hong Kong Disneyland to its north. The weather information at Peng Chau provided by the Observatory includes temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and wind direction. Furthermore, real-time weather photos are provided to enable the public to view the weather conditions there (see attached maps).

The Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Mr. C.Y. Lam, said "The tranquil environment of Peng Chau with its diversified ecology makes it a popular destination for lovers of natural scenery. We hope that this new weather service can provide the latest weather information for the public, and allow them to better plan their travel to Peng Chau and Lantau Island."

The Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Ms Clara Chong, warmly welcomed the provision of Peng Chau weather information on the Internet by the Hong Kong Observatory. "Peng Chau Island retains much of Hong Kong's rich heritage," she said. "It allows visitors to experience the city's colourful past, its splendid countryside and idyllic island life. Located south of Hong Kong Disneyland at Penny's Bay, it is in vivid contrast to Lantau Island on which various major new attractions, which also include Ngong Ping 360 and AsiaWorld-Expo, are due to open soon. Together these islands showcase the diverse and multi-dimensional attractions of Hong Kong."

"The online weather services for Peng Chau, which will also offer real-time photos overlooking Penny's Bay and Hong Kong Disneyland, will tie in with the opening of the theme park this September," she added. "They will help visitors better plan their travel and enable them to have a truly wonderful time in Hong Kong."

The Executive Director of the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong, Mr Joseph Tung, said "The Observatory's Regional Weather webpages have always been very useful to the tourism industry. It is already providing weather information for many tourist spots including the Peak, Po Lin Monastery, Stanley, Sheung Shui, Cheung Chau and Pak Tam Chung. The new automatic weather station and camera at Peng Chau will enable the public and visitors to appreciate the weather conditions around Hong Kong Disneyland. This will serve the tourism industry even better."
