Hong Kong Observatory trains scout leaders

The Hong Kong Observatory provided training to more than 60 scout leaders for the Hong Kong Scout Association, with an aim to raising their meteorological knowledge. Upon completion of the course, scout leaders are expected to pass on the knowledge for fellow scouts to obtain the "Meteorologist Badge" - one of the scout proficiency badges, which shows that the holders have the meteorological knowledge required for conduct of outdoor activities.

The course which began in mid March has just concluded and participants learnt the basics of weather forecasting, weather systems affecting Hong Kong, techniques of weather observation, and information available on the Observatory's website. The course emphasised the effect of weather on outdoor activities, and raised people's awareness of the precautions to take during adverse weather.

Chairman of the Meteorology Interest Group of the Hong Kong Scout Association Mr Ngan King-wai thanked the Hong Kong Observatory for organising the course. "The lecturers are resourceful, their presentations lively and interesting, and the course very practical and useful," Mr Ngan said.

One of the scout leaders, Mr Ho Sau-chiu indicated that a better understanding of the weather would enable them to respond properly when their activities were affected by weather changes.

Besides organising training for scouts, the Observatory also regularly runs training courses on basic meteorology for the public to enhance public awareness of weather changes and disaster management.
