Hong Kong Observatory opens to public this weekend

The Hong Kong Observatory will be open to the public on March 19 and 20 (Saturday and Sunday).

In March every year, the observatory organises an Open Day to celebrate World Meteorological Day, which falls on March 23.

This year, the theme of World Meteorological Day is "Weather, Climate, Water and Sustainable Development". The theme was selected in recognition of the outstanding contribution of meteorology, among other scientific disciplines, to human progress, sustainable socio-economic development, environmental protection and poverty alleviation. It is also intended to raise people's awareness of the threat to sustainable development from the increased impact of extreme weather and climate events such as tropical cyclones, floods, drought and heat waves.

A special exhibition explaining the work of the Hong Kong Observatory will be staged for the visitors. One of the attractions is a simulated Forecasting Office where weather forecasters will explain how weather forecasts for the day and the next seven days are made.

Visitors can also enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the lush tropical vegetation of the observatory headquarters from the balcony of a 120-year-old historical building.

Admission to the observatory will be from 9.30am to 4pm on both days with the exhibition closing at 4.45 pm.

All members of the public are welcome. The observatory is located at 134A Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon. Entrance is at the main gate in Nathan Road near Tsim Sha Tsui Kai Fong Welfare Association. The gate in Observatory Road is for exit only.

No tickets are required, but entry will be regulated if necessary.
