Observatory takes gold in solar cart race
Observatory takes gold in solar cart race (18 January 2005)
The Hong Kong Observatory won the Charity Gold Award in the Solar Cart Race organised by the Friends of the Earth held at the Victoria Park on January 16.
It was the first time the Observatory participated in the race, now into its fifth year. The Observatory, in a cart called "Solar Wind", took the gold award in the Advance Team category.
The Observatory joined the race to raise public interest on weather and climate, thus enhancing awareness of the environment. The name of the cart, "Solar Wind", was chosen because apart from being weather elements, both the "sun" and "wind" are also sources of renewable energy.
Besides its aerodynamic design which lowers air resistance, "Solar Wind" is characterised by the use of re-useable materials on the entire cart body, including aluminium cans and compact discs, to minimise waste. Safety is also an important consideration in the design of "Solar Wind", which features headlights, backlights, rear mirrors, horn and brakes, to protect the racers as well as spectators near the track.
The Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Mr C Y Lam said the team completed the 10-kilometre race within 30 minutes, and this was beyond our expectations.
" The race was fun for our colleagues and their relatives, and also boosted their sense of belonging to the department. I am particularly proud of winning the Charity Gold Award, because this indicated that our colleagues always care about the community and give contributions to charity without reservation."
