The Hong Kong Observatory to organise Weather Observation course

Members of the public are being invited to join a training course in May on "Weather Observation" organised by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Weather affects different walks of life. Looking at the sky, you will notice clouds of different shapes which change according to weather conditions and the season. From these observations, you can probably tell what the current weather is like or even predict short-term changes. In Hong Kong, there is no lack of weather enthusiasts and it is to meet their demands that the Observatory is organising this training course.

One of the lecturers, Mr Lam Kai-bun, Chief Scientific Assistant of the Hong Kong Observatory, has had many years experience in weather observation. He said, "Appreciating the weather through observation is the first step in weather forecasting. This course will introduce the basics of weather observation such as cloud observation and classification. Participants will also be able to observe the weather themselves under the guidance of
Observatory staff."

Mr Lam pointed out that there were many traditional sayings relating sky conditions to weather changes and some of them have their limitations when it comes to different geographical regions. The public must bear this in mind in applying these weather sayings.

He said, "The course is particularly suitable for people fond of outdoor activities. A better understanding of the weather will enable them to respond properly when their activities are affected by weather changes.

To be held on the mornings of May 22 and 29, 2004, the course will be conducted in Cantonese. The fee is $195 per person. Those interested are invited to check out details and enrol at:
