Rainstorm on 11 June 2003

The trough of low pressure over the south China coast continued to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to Hong Kong today (Wednesday, 11 June 2003).

The Hong Kong Observatory issued the Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal at 11:30 p.m. last night (10 June 2003). The Special Announcement on Flooding in the Northern New Territories was also issued five minutes later. The heavy downpour over the northern part of the New Territories lasted for around 5 hours. With the downpour easing off, the Special Announcement on Flooding in the Northern New Territories was cancelled at 6:00 a.m. this morning (11 June 2003). Later on, heavy rain was mainly confined to the southern part of Hong Kong Island. After 2:00 p.m., rain gradually eased off over the territory and the Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal was cancelled at 2:20 p.m.

More than 100 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over most parts of the territory when the Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal was in force. The heaviest downpour occurred in Yuen Long, Fanling, the central part of Kowloon and the western part of Hong Kong Island, where over 150 millimetres of rainfall were recorded. The weather tomorrow (Thursday, 12 June 2003) is expected to be cloudy with scattered showers, heavy at times with squally thunderstorms in the morning.
