New Hong Kong Observatory 'Thunderstorm Warning' Pamphlet

The Hong Kong Observatory has updated the 'Thunderstorm Warning' pamphlet. The new pamphlet can be obtained free of charge from District Offices and from the Hong Kong Observatory Resource Centre located in Room 2304-2309 on the 23rd floor of Miramar Towers on Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui (telephone: 2926 8250). It can also be browsed on the Hong Kong Observatory website http://www.hko.gov.hk/publica/pubgen.htm

The new pamphlet details the purpose of the Hong Kong Observatory's Thunderstorm Warning, the contents of this Warning, characteristics of thunderstorms in Hong Kong and points to note by members of the public when the Thunderstorm Warning is in force. Compared to the old one, the new pamphlet points out that the development, movement and dissipation of thunderstorm can be quite rapid and fairly localized. It also provides points to note for more types of activities such as taking showers, driving, hiking and other outdoor activities.

Background information on thunderstorms such as the meteorological conditions under which they form, related phenomena such as tornadoes, water spouts and hail, the potential hazards posed by thunderstorms as well as statistics on thunderstorms in Hong Kong are also given in the new pamphlet.
