The Hong Kong Observatory shared its 120 years of history with members of the public on its Open Day on Saturday and Sunday (22 - 23 March 2003).
During the two-day Open Day, over 4000 members of the public visited the Observatory at Tsim Sha Tsui. Twenty specially designed panels illustrated, in a nutshell, the history of development of the services provided by the Observatory. Other exhibits included authentic meteorological instruments, games and quizzes on weather phenomena. A highlight of the Open Day was a simulated Forecasting Office where weather forecasters explained in real time the weather situation and how they made their weather forecasts. Apart from Observatory's staff, some 30 members of the voluntary group "Friends of the Observatory" helped explain the exhibits to the visitors.
The 120th anniversary slogan "Serving through Science" aptly described the core message the Observatory had conveyed to the visitors during the Open Day.
