Cold Weather (9 December 2002)
Under the influence of an intense northeast monsoon, local weather turned cold yesterday (8 December 2002, Sunday). The temperature at the Hong Kong Observatory fell sharply from 23.9 degrees in the early hours to 11.8 degrees at around 7 pm, resulting in a temperature drop of 12.1 degrees in a day. The large temperature decrease in one day yesterday is quite rare and ranks the fourth highest in any day in December and it is also the 15th highest in any day of the year in over 100 years of record at the Observatory. The weather continued to be cold this morning (9 December 2002). The minimum temperature at the Hong Kong Observatory was 11.1 degrees which was the lowest so far recorded this winter. Temperatures in the New Territories were about 8 to 9 degrees. (See map attached) The northeast monsoon is expected to continue to bring cold weather tonight and tomorrow morning. The minimum temperature tonight will drop to about 12 degrees in urban areas and it will be a few degrees lower in the New Territories. The Cold Weather Warning is in force. The following precautions should be noted: 1. Please avoid prolonged exposure to wintry winds. 2. If you know of elderly or persons with chronic medical conditions staying alone, please call or visit them occasionally to check if they need any assistance. 3. Make sure heaters are safe before use, and place them away from any combustibles. 4. Whatever the temperature, please ensure that there is plenty of fresh air in your room when you are using an old-type gas water heater.
