Weather Family Figures Received Warm Response at Hong Kong Observatory's Open Day (24 March 2002)
Photograph session with impersonated members of the Weather Family was the most popular attraction at the Hong Kong Observatory's Open Day on Saturday and Sunday (23-24 March 2002). The Weather Family figures were the winning designs of a competition held at the end of last year (2001) to create a set of mascots to symbolize the authentic weather reports of the Observatory and to bring out the caring image of the Observatory. During the two-day Open Day, despite the humid and rainy weather, over 9,000 members of the public visited the Observatory at Tsim Sha Tsui. They were shown various exhibits including meteorological instruments and videos on the activities of the department. Apart from Observatory's staff, 30 members of the voluntary group "Friends of the Observatory" helped explain the exhibits to the visitors. Besides photograph session with impersonated Weather Family members, games promoting knowledge in weather were also popular especially among children and the young-hearted. The Observatory is impressed by the warm response of the public and will consider hosting the Open Day annually.
