Rainstorm during the evening of 1 September and early morning of 2 September 2001

Under the influence of a trough of low pressure, heavy rain and squally thunderstorms affected Hong Kong during the evening of 1 September and the early morning of 2 September 2001, which necessitated the issuance of the Amber, Red and Black Rainstorm Warning Signals. It is the first issuance of the Black Rainstorm Warning Signal this year.

Over 100mm of rainfall were recorded over most part of Hong Kong during the period that the rainstorm warnings were in effect. The most seriously affected areas were Tsuen Wan, Kwai Chung, Sha Tin, and the western part of Kowloon where over 200 mm of rainfall were recorded. More than 150mm of rainfall were also recorded over Sai Kung and the northern part of the Lantau Island. The rainfall distribution for Hong Kong for the period is attached.

The effective times of the signals issued for the rainstorm are as follows:

Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal

5:30 p.m. to 10:05 p.m. on 1 September 2001

Red Rainstorm Warning Signal

10:05 p.m. to 10:45 p.m. on 1 September 2001

Black Rainstorm Warning Signal

10:45 p.m. on 1 September 2001 to 3:15 a.m. on 2 September 2001

10:45 p.m. on 1 September 2001 to 10:00 a.m. on 2 September 2001
